We are assisting a well-established Trade Union, and they are recruiting for an experienced Head of Communications to join the business on an initial 9-month fixed contract (with possibility of going permanent).
 
This role would be ideal for an experienced Communications professional who has either trade union, public sector, or education experience (or something similar).
 
This role is a remote working position with the opportunity to use the office as and when preferred - so fully flexible position, either home based, hybrid or office working.
 
Reporting into a Senior Director, the role will be responsible for leading the communications team, development and implementation of the Communication and Media strategy, and ensure strategic and operational aims and objectives are met. Key duties and areas of responsibility will include;
 
-Leading and head of the Communications team - managing a team of 4 people.
-Develop and implementation of an effective communications strategy for the business, including supporting with the planning, setting, and managing of the Communications team budget
-Develop and implement communications strategies for specific projects and programmes
-Responsibility for the development and implementation of communication and media strategies and protocol, covering all relevant channels including social media.
-Maintain awareness and knowledge of current issues and political trends in the education sector.
-Develop and maintain relationships with appropriate media outlets and political contacts, including managing an efficient media relations and news information service, monitor and analyse media coverage and develop and -maintain a database of press contacts and manage media cuttings service.
-Organise national and regional press conferences, interviews, briefings, member engagement events (online and in-person), and fringe meetings.
-Explore and establish new ways of communicating with members and groups with an interest in the work of the union.
-Write press releases, briefing notes, articles, speeches, social media content and other materials, including responding to press and media enquiries, brief journalists and promote key senior staff members to the media by arranging appropriate appearances, interviews, and articles.
-Manage the appraisal and development of team members and support recruitment planning and processes
-Ensure material issued by the Communications team is accurate and consistent with policies and strategies.
-Advise on the promotion of the union to its members and potential members.

For this role it is essential that candidates have proven Communications experience at this level. Ideally candidates will have media communications experience and experience of developing and implementing communications strategies.
 
Experience of Trade Unions would be advantageous, including candidates from Not for Profit, Education, Public Sector or Political / Campaigning organisations. Although this is not essential, and candidates form all industries will be considered with the relevant experience.
