We are assisting one of the largest trade unions in the education sector, with the recruitment of a Department Manager / Head of Sector role, responsible for bargaining, organising and campaigns.
 
Leading a team of 4 people and reporting into Director level, the role will ensure that all strategic and operational aims of the department are met.
 
For this role candidates must have proven and strong negotiation and bargaining experience, trade union experience and ideally knowledge and understanding of the education sector. Key duties and responsibilities will include;
 
Manage and oversee a team of 4 people and lead the department, including bargaining, organising and campaign management
Liaise and work collaboratively with the Head of Bargaining and other Heads of Department to implement policy objectives.
Lead development and co-ordination of policies and objectives across the department
Lead responsibility for national negotiations with employers on pay and conditions
Represent the trade union with bargaining, including meetings with employers, members, other unions, and external organisations.
In conjunction with other department, advise on and contribute to the development of the trade unions policies and objectives.
Develop national strategies for implementing related policies.
Develop, manage, and lead relationships with nationally elected officers, national negotiators, and other senior elected officers.
Develop and manage relationships with national employers and other trade unions.
Working with other departments on organising conferences, national meetings, and other significant meetings.
Working with the Head of Bargaining and support local negotiations of national significance and process applications for authority for industrial action and ballots.
 
For this role candidates will need to have proven experience at this level within a Trade Union environment and be confident managing an established team. Knowledge of the Education sector is ideally required, although trade union candidates from other industries will also be considered, if they have the relevant negotiation and bargaining experience.
 
Persuasive communication and strong people skills are essential, with a confident approach to leading on negotiation and bargaining meetings with employers.
