Cameron James Professional Recruitment is working with an established and successful business in the Portsmouth area to recruit an experienced Payroll & Finance Officer.
 
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong background in payroll, supplier payments and finance administration who is looking to take ownership of a varied and responsible position within a busy finance team.
 
Reporting directly to the Financial Controller, the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll, supplier payments and associated tax compliance.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
- Manage weekly and monthly payroll processes from start to finish using Sage Payroll.
- Process starters, leavers, overtime, statutory payments, pension contributions and payroll adjustments.
- Ensure accurate and timely PAYE, RTI and HMRC submissions.
- Prepare and process supplier and subcontractor payment runs, ensuring invoices are correctly authorised and reconciled.
- Assist with CIS (Construction Industry Scheme) verification, deductions and monthly returns.
- Prepare quarterly VAT returns, including reconciliations and compliance with Making Tax Digital requirements.
- Maintain accurate payroll, pension, PAYE, CIS and VAT records.
- Reconcile relevant control accounts and assist with month-end finance processes.
- Liaise with internal departments, suppliers and external organisations to resolve payroll and payment queries.
- Support the Financial Controller with maintaining effective financial controls and improving existing processes.
 
Skills & Experience Required
 
- Previous experience in a payroll and finance-related position, ideally with at least three years' relevant experience.
- Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, PAYE, RTI, statutory payments and pension auto-enrolment.
- Experience processing supplier payments and working with accounting systems.
- Previous experience using Sage Payroll and/or Sage accounting software.
- Good understanding of VAT and general accounting procedures.
- Experience with CIS and construction-related payments would be advantageous, although not essential.
- Good Excel skills and excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to manage deadlines, work independently and maintain confidentiality.
 
Candidates from construction, engineering, contracting or other commercially focused environments are particularly encouraged to apply, although relevant experience from other sectors will also be considered.
