We are actively assisting a leading MGA as they seek a Head of Technical Schemes Underwriting to set the underwriting strategy for the Financial & Specialist Risks products. Ensuring the delivery of the required return on capital to insurer partners and to ensure the underwriting team maintains company underwriting standards

To understand and identify accounts within the specified product range that fall short of performance targets and to be responsible for recommending remedial pricing, growth or exit strategies to ensure ultimate profitability of the specified book of business.

To deal with or act as referral point for specified product underwriting for complex, unusual or financially significant items; approving submissions from underwriters out with their underwriting license.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and responsible for delivering and executing the underwriting strategy and ensuring the delivery of the required return to insurer partners. Being specifically accountable for the delivery in the following areas:-

• Rating model(s) for agreed products targeted to deliver required ULR’s
• Policy wording(s)
• Underwriting guides
• Underwriting licences
• To underwrite the larger, more complex or financially unusual and significant schemes and maintain and manage the sign off of quotes over the authority levels of the individual underwriters and referrals into the Product and Pricing Committee

Working with the Distribution teams to innovatively develop products, responsibility for which will include:

• Policy wordings
• Underwriting guides
• Rates
• Responsibility for peer review in the underwriting team, which will include training and development, file audit and technical advice and the technical development of the underwriters

Work closely with insurer partners to ensure detailed understanding by both parties of required returns and delivery of said requirements, which will include changes to underwriting strategy which will be delivered to the underwriting department.

You will be required to understand current and potential future rules and requirements of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and any other legal/regulatory/risk management frameworks

To match the clients’ requirements you will ideally have a minimum of 7 years Underwriting experience with strong problem solving and decision making skills and good working knowledge of local market. Proven experience of developing people being accountable for profitable underwriting performance. Preferably ACII qualified or working towards.
