I am currently recruiting for a Import Manager to join a well-established Food Whole sale company.

Our client has been established over 50 year’s in the wholesale and Distribution sector, specialising in international foods. They are a family run business who are going through a significant growth and really pride themselves on brining people in and giving them a career they can look forward to long term - know 2 days are the same.

They have extensive contacts across the Far East & Europe and source products globally. They now require and are looking for an experienced Import Manager based at there head office to ensure that our imports (primarily sea freight) and supply chain processes are timely and cost effective for the business and are in line with customs and HMRC regulations.

The ideal candidate needs to be able to hit the ground running and be passionate about their job and able to work alongside various departments and be able to think on their toes.

Responsible for the management of import process and inbound supply chain, ensuring timely product availability:

Main tasks

• Liaising with our buyers and suppliers to ensure products have appropriate documentation ready for the UK
• Legal compliance and adherence to HMRC regulations
• Problem solving any import/custom issues such as disputes over weights, codes, quotas, missing paperwork etc
• Act as single point of contact for incoming goods and to proactively report delivery status to sales and operations
• Liaising with shipping and logistics companies to ensure timely delivery
• Costing of imports, transport and goods


• Ensure all necessary administration is carried out for imports including Bill of Laden (BOL), invoice, EUR1/GSP certificate and ensuring paperwork is issued to all necessary agents
• Apply for import licenses (and quota), for e.g. rice and sugar or any commodities as required
• Logging and managing containers and freight onto system ensuring accuracy of arrival dates booking deliveries into delivery calendar ensuring correct P/O are used, if required amending or raising P/O matching goods shipped to give goods in an easier task of checking stock on arrival
• Liaise with suppliers on updates of shipments, chasing orders, shipping documents etc and to make adjustments to chain supply process as necessary
• Liaise with clearing agents on releases, deliveries, documents, tariff codes and any queries from customs or port health authorities. Planning deliveries so containers are off quay within free time but also meeting Goods inward restrictions
• Ensure agent and customs formalities are taken into account to allow timely planning of deliveries. Balancing between the longer risk clearances and urgent stock against demurrage and warehouse capacity
• Monitoring stock levels to ensure effective use of storage and timely delivery of products. Placing orders or amending shipping dates as and when required
• Carry out costings taking into account exchange rates, duty, excise and freight Amending prices or informing relevant buyer
• General correspondence with most suppliers on any issues from product defects to loading techniques
